Additional details of the 4-day Salkantay tour are as follows:
Cusco
4:30 am
Prior acclimatization is key. We recommend staying at least 2 days in Cusco (3,400 m (11,155 ft) / 11,150 ft) before starting to prevent altitude sickness. On Day 1 or 2, we will ascend to the highest point, Salkantay Pass (4,630 m (15,190 ft) / 15,190 ft), where the alpine weather is very cold and snow is possible. Conversely, from Day 3 onwards, we enter the high jungle (1,500 m (4,921 ft) / 4,920 ft) with warm and humid weather. Pack in layers (waterproof jacket, fleece, thermal wear) and wear broken-in hiking boots.
You will hike weight-free. We subtly suggest leaving your heavy travel bags under the free and secure storage of your own hotel in Cusco, and highly recommend booking the same hotel for your return night for maximum comfort. As an alternative, you can store your bags for free in our main office warehouse. For the trek, our service includes pack horses and horsemen to transport a duffel bag (provided by us) with a strict limit of 5 kg (11 lbs) for your overnight gear. You only carry a light daypack (20-30L) for daily essentials like water, windbreaker, sunscreen, and snacks.
Salkantay Trek is classified as moderate to challenging. The most demanding section is the ascent to the Salkantay Pass due to the elevation and slope. However, no technical climbing experience is required, just a good general physical condition and mental resilience. You will hike 6 to 8 hours daily; using trekking poles is highly recommended to provide excellent support on steep descents.
We guarantee a comfortable and safe return. Your package includes a ticket on the Classic Train (Expedition by PeruRail or Voyager by Inca Rail) from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, scheduled for the afternoon. We strictly avoid risky 7-hour informal buses via Hidroeléctrica. Upon arrival at Ollantaytambo, our private driver will wait for you with a sign to transfer you in a comfortable and secure minivan directly back to your hotel in Cusco.
