Technical Route Summary: The 4-day Salkantay Trek is an express high-mountain expedition covering 58 kilometers (36 miles), operated directly by Inka Jungle Tour with official MINCETUR Cusco licensing. Designed for physically active travelers with tight schedules, it retains all major alpine highlights: the turquoise waters of Humantay Lake (4,200 m) on Day 1, the crossing of Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) on Day 2, a fast-track connection from Santa Teresa to Hydroelectric on Day 3, and the guided tour of Machu Picchu on Day 4.
If you want the full challenge of the glacial Andes without committing five full calendar days, the 4-day Salkantay express delivers the core experience. Here is the daily operational plan followed by our field guides.
Departure is at 4:30 AM from your Cusco hotel in our private transport, traveling through the Andean highlands of Limatambo to Mollepata for a hearty breakfast. Continuing to Challacancha, we meet our muleteers and pack horses. We hike along the restored Inca water channel overlooking the Mollepata valley, reaching our mountain camp at Soraypampa by noon. Following a freshly prepared hot lunch, we begin the steep 1.5-hour afternoon trek to Laguna Humantay (4,200 m). The view of the turquoise lake directly beneath the jagged Humantay glacier is one of the most celebrated vistas in the Andes. After taking photographs and resting, we descend back to Soraypampa for a hot dinner and early sleep.
We begin before dawn with hot coca tea delivered to your tent. Day 2 is the most demanding and rewarding section of the trek. We climb the rocky switchbacks of the “Trail of the 7 Snakes” to the highest point of the entire expedition: the Abra Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters (15,190 ft). Here, massive hanging glaciers and vertical rock faces of Mount Salkantay (6,271 m) tower overhead. After a traditional ceremony honoring the mountain Apus, we begin a long, steady descent into the warm subtropical cloud forest, stopping for hot lunch at Huayracmachay before reaching our camp at Chaullay (2,900 m).
In the morning, we hike through the lush Santa Teresa river valley surrounded by waterfalls, granadilla fruit plantations, and wild orchids, arriving at La Playa by midday. While the 5-day route climbs the Llactapata mountain ridge on foot, the 4-day express transfers by private van from La Playa directly to the Hydroelectric railway station. After a freshly cooked lunch at Hydroelectric, we complete the flat 3-hour riverside hike along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes town. Hikers check into comfortable private hotel rooms with hot showers and Wi-Fi, meeting for a celebratory dinner to prepare for the final ascent to Machu Picchu.
At 5:30 AM, we board the shuttle bus to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu. Your certified mountain guide conducts an in-depth 2.5-hour tour through the main architectural sectors, including the Sun Temple, royal quarters, sacred plazas, and agricultural terraces. Following the tour, you take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, collect your stored duffel bags, and board the afternoon Expedition train to Ollantaytambo. Our private transfer meets you at the station and returns you directly to your Cusco hotel by 7:30 PM.

Yes. The 4-day express itinerary includes the full ascent to Laguna Humantay (4,200 m) on the afternoon of Day 1, ensuring you do not miss this iconic alpine glacial lake.
To finish the expedition in 4 days, Day 3 utilizes a scenic 1.5-hour vehicle transfer from La Playa to Hydroelectric, bypassing the 6-hour mountain climb over Llactapata. This saves 16 kilometers of steep hiking and allows hikers to reach Aguas Calientes town early for proper rest.
Because the daily mileage is condensed and Day 2 covers 22 kilometers with a 4,630-meter alpine pass, we recommend this route for active individuals with previous hiking experience who have acclimatized in Cusco for at least 48 hours before departure.
Machu Picchu entrance permits are strictly nominal and capacity-controlled by Peru's Ministry of Culture. We operate with complete transparency:
We secure Circuit 2 (Classic Panoramic Full Route) with priority, subject to official quota at confirmation.
If Circuit 2 is already sold out, we guarantee the best official alternative (Circuit 3 Royalty or Circuit 1 Panoramic).
