Want to witness the majesty of the Andes without enduring extreme hikes? The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour is the perfect alternative to Vinicunca: a gentle, nearly flat walk of just 1.5 km (0.9 miles) at 4,900 m (16,076 ft) of altitude, where you can admire not one, but THREE colorful rainbow mountains and a mystical stone forest! Enjoy a relaxed pace and colossal crowd-free views in our comfortable tourist transportation. 🏔️🦙

Forget the mass tourism of Vinicunca and rediscover the rainbow mountain range from a truly unforgettable perspective. Our full-day expedition to Palcoyo is designed for travelers of all ages looking for a more accessible and photogenic high-mountain experience. If you prefer to complement your trip with dynamic high-jungle adventures, explore our famous Inka Jungle Backpacker circuit, ideal for connecting with Andean nature with complete freedom.

The journey begins early in the morning, crossing the picturesque South Valley. Our first stop will be in Checacupe to admire its historical bridges (Inca, colonial, and republican eras). Next, we will gradually ascend in tourist transportation to the trailhead of Palcoyo, where a nearly flat path will lead you in less than an hour to spectacular viewpoints, surrounded by local alpacas and unique rock formations.

Want to combine this excursion with the most classic archaeology in Cusco? We recommend checking out the Sacred Valley Complete, an ideal trip to admire Pisac and Ollantaytambo in absolute comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

🥾 What is the real physical difficulty of Palcoyo, and is it suitable for children or seniors?

The hike to Palcoyo is very easy and of low difficulty. The trail is nearly flat and is only 1.5 km (0.9 miles) in total length (round trip), taking approximately 45 to 60 minutes at a very gentle pace. It is ideal for families, children, and seniors who want to view the rainbow mountains without the extreme physical exhaustion required for Vinicunca.

🏔️ How does the altitude in Palcoyo affect the body, and what preparation is recommended?

Palcoyo is located at a high altitude, reaching 4,900 m (16,076 ft) at the main viewpoint. Although the walk is physically gentle, your body will feel the thin air. We recommend spending at least 1 or 2 days acclimating in Cusco before taking this tour, drinking plenty of water or coca tea, and walking slowly.

🌈 What is the real difference between Vinicunca Mountain and Palcoyo?

The main differences are the physical effort and the crowds: 1) Vinicunca requires a steep, demanding 7 km round-trip hike up to 5,200 m, whereas Palcoyo is an easy, nearly flat 1.5 km walk at 4,900 m. 2) Vinicunca draws thousands of daily tourists, while Palcoyo offers a peaceful, low-impact experience. 3) In Palcoyo, you see three different colorful mountains and a stone forest.

🧥 What clothing and gear should I pack in my daypack?

At this altitude, the weather is very cold and wind is constant. You should dress in layers: a thermal base layer, a warm fleece, and a windproof/waterproof jacket. Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, a warm beanie and gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, a rain poncho, a water bottle, and light snacks.

💵 Are meals and entrance fees included in this tour?

The tour includes a full buffet breakfast and a country buffet lunch at a local restaurant, along with comfortable transportation and a bilingual guide. The entry fee charged by the Palcoyo community (15 to 20 Soles) is not included in the base price and must be paid directly in cash.
