What will you experience on the 2-day Short Inca Trail?

The Short 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail is the ultimate classic express trekking route to Machu Picchu, designed for travelers with limited time who wish to hike the ancestral path without camping. With a 12 km (7.5 miles) active hike on the first day, you will cross the Urubamba River suspension bridge at Km 104, explore the spectacular ruins of Wiñay Wayna (2,680 m / 8,792 ft), walk through the Sun Gate (Intipunku) to witness Machu Picchu at sunset, stay in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, and enjoy an elite guided tour of the Citadel on Day 2 before returning to Cusco via the classic train.

The 2-day Inka Trail to Machu Picchu is the solution for those who could not book the classic 4-day Inka Trail and perfect for those with tight schedules. With only 16 km of travel, you will reach Machu Picchu through the Puerta del Sol (Inti Punku). It combines a train trip with a hike, giving you the opportunity to travel part of the ancient Inca trail and enjoy spectacular landscapes during the first day and finally visit Machu Picchu on the second day.

If you have more days and are looking for the complete experience, we recommend the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days. You can also complement your trip with a full day to Humantay Lake.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Inca Trail 2 Days

🏛️ How far in advance do I need to book Short Inca Trail permits?

The Short Inca Trail also requires strict government daily permits. The limits are strictly enforced and shared. Therefore, it is highly indispensable to book at least 2 to 3 months in advance. Just like the classic trek, permits are strictly personal, non-transferable, and non-refundable.

🌧️ Is the Short Inca Trail open in February?

No. The entire Inca Trail sanctuary and all its paths are strictly closed in February. This includes both the classic 4-day and the short 2-day versions. The closure is by law due to the rainy season and for conservation works. In February, you can enjoy excellent alternative routes such as Salkantay Trek, Inka Jungle, or direct train tours.

🎒 How is luggage managed on the Short 2-Day Inca Trail?

You will travel light and hassle-free. We strongly advise leaving your heavy travel bags under the free storage of your own hotel in Cusco, and recommend booking the return night there for your convenience. Alternatively, our main office has a free and secure warehouse.

On the 2-day Inca Trail, **there are no porters or pack horses**. Therefore, you will carry your own overnight gear for one night in your backpack (we recommend a 30 to 40-liter pack). On Day 1, you will hike with it from Km 104 to Aguas Calientes, where you will check into a comfortable hotel.
