Best Time to Visit Huaraz: Weather & Andean Dry Season %currentyear%
Planning an expedition to Huaraz requires synchronizing your travel dates with the Andean Dry Season (known locally as the Verano Andino). Due to its proximity to the equator, Huaraz experiences stable daytime temperatures year-round; the critical variable is rainfall, cloud cover, and pass snow conditions.
The Andean Dry Season: May to September
This is the prime window for trekking and mountaineering in the Cordillera Blanca:
Atmospheric Conditions: Consistent high-pressure systems bring crystal-clear deep blue skies, dry trails, and exceptional visibility of glaciated summits like Huascarán (6,768 m) and Alpamayo (5,947 m).
Day & Night Temperatures: Daytime valley highs reach 18°C to 21°C with bright sunshine. Nights are bitterly cold, regularly dropping between -2°C and -7°C at mountain campsites above 4,000 meters.
Best Months: June, July, and August represent the peak trekking season with minimal rainfall days.
The Shoulder Seasons: April & October
Conditions: Characterized by transitional weather. You experience lush green valley vegetation and quiet trails with far fewer hikers.
Considerations: Afternoon rain showers occur 3 to 4 days per week. Good waterproof gear and flexible daily hiking schedules are required.
The Wet Season: November to March
Conditions: Sustained rainfall in valleys and heavy snowfall on high mountain passes (Punta Unión, Yanashallash). Morning sunshine frequently gives way to heavy afternoon cloudbursts by 01:00 PM.
Risks: Landslides can temporarily block mountain roads in the Callejon de Huaylas. High alpine circuits like Santa Cruz or Huayhuash are not recommended for recreational hikers during these months.
