The Manu National Park 4-Day Itinerary is one of the world’s greatest overland ecological descents. Within a single day, travelers descend from high Andean tundra at 3,560 meters through moss-draped cloud forests down to lowland Amazon riverways at 450 meters, traversing multiple distinct biological life zones.
We depart Cusco at 5:30 AM in private expedition transport, climbing across the Andean plateau to visit the pre-Inca funeral towers (chullpas) of Ninamarca. We cross the high pass at Acjanaco (3,560m), the official gateway to Manu National Park. From here, the road descends into the cloud forest of San Pedro. We pause along shaded jungle trails to observe the courtship displays of Peru’s national bird, the scarlet Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), alongside woolly monkeys and orchids, arriving at our Pilcopata lodge for dinner.
After breakfast, a short drive brings us to the river port of Atalaya. We board our motorized wooden canoe and navigate downstream along the turbulent waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River. We check into our riverside lodge and explore the primary rainforest trails. In the afternoon, we transfer to Machuwasi Oxbow Lake, gliding on wooden balsa rafts to observe prehistoric hoatzin birds (“dinosaur birds”), black caimans, horned screamers, and capybaras resting along the shoreline.
At 5:30 AM, we boat downstream to a mineral-rich river cliff known as a clay lick (collpa). Flocks of blue-headed parrots, yellow-crowned amazons, and chestnut-fronted macaws gather to ingest minerals that neutralize plant toxins. After breakfast, our naturalist guide leads a deep botanical trek explaining medicinal lianas, walking palms, and giant strangler figs. After nightfall, a night walk reveals tarantulas, tree frogs, scorpions, and glowing insects.
We take our motorized canoe back upstream against the river current to Atalaya Port. Reboarding our private transport, we climb back through the cloud forest, enjoying scenic stops for mountain waterfalls and afternoon panoramas over the Paucartambo valleys, arriving back in Cusco by 6:30 PM.
Descend from high Andean cloud forests to lowland Amazonian riverways. Spot cock-of-the-rock leks, giant river otters, caimans, and colorful macaw clay licks.
Official expedition to the Cultural Zone: cloud forest, motorized boat navigation on the Madre de Dios River, and private jungle lodges.
