Technical Route Summary: The classic 5-day Salkantay Trek covers 74 kilometers (46 miles) of rugged alpine terrain and subtropical cloud forest, operated directly by Inka Jungle Tour under official MINCETUR Cusco license. The itinerary climbs to Humantay Lake (4,200 m) on Day 1, crosses the glacial Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) on Day 2, descends into the lush high jungle on Day 3, traces the original Inca path over Llactapata (2,730 m) on Day 4, and culminates in a comprehensive guided exploration of Machu Picchu on Day 5.
The 5-day classic Salkantay Trek is widely recognized by mountain guides as the ideal route to Machu Picchu because its progression allows gradual physiological acclimatization. Below is the exact operational itinerary executed daily by our mountain logistics team.
We pick you up from your Cusco accommodation at 4:30 AM in private transport, driving 2.5 hours through the Limatambo valley to Mollepata (2,900 m) for an energizing breakfast. From there, we continue to Challacancha, where our horsemen assemble the pack mules and gear. The trek begins along a restored Inca aqueduct contouring gently toward Soraypampa. After settling into our 4-season alpine base camp and enjoying a hot lunch prepared by our chef, we tackle the steep 1.5-hour ascent to Laguna Humantay (4,200 m). You have ample time to take in the brilliant turquoise glacial waters framed by the Humantay ice cliff before descending to Soraypampa for a warm dinner and starlit mountain rest.
Wake up at 5:00 AM with hot coca tea served directly at your tent. This is the hallmark day of the expedition. We begin the switchback climb up the “Trail of the 7 Snakes” toward the Abra Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). Reaching the pass puts you directly beneath the towering 6,271-meter eastern face of Mount Salkantay. After resting and performing a traditional Andean Kintu offering with our guide, we begin an exhilarating 3-hour descent over rocky glacial moraines to Huayracmachay (3,912 m) for a hearty hot lunch. During the afternoon, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation: dry mountain scree gives way to lush bamboo thickets, orchids, and warm mountain air as we descend into the cloud forest to our camp at Chaullay (2,900 m).
Following a warm breakfast, we trek along the Santa Teresa river canyon through the high jungle (Ceja de Selva). We hike past rushing waterfalls, wild passion fruit trees, avocado groves, and organic coffee plantations. Arriving at Lucmabamba by early afternoon, we settle into camp and participate in a local coffee roasting demonstration. Later, private transport takes the group to the natural volcanic hot springs of Cocalmayo in Santa Teresa. Soaking in the warm 38°C sulfur-free pools provides the ultimate muscle recovery before returning to Lucmabamba for dinner.
We depart early along an ancient stone Inca roadway ascending through dense cloud forest toward the archaeological ridge of Llactapata (2,730 m). Reaching this remote ruins site rewards hikers with a rare, panoramic view of the Machu Picchu citadel perched directly across the Aobamba canyon. After exploring the ruins, we descend through bamboo groves to the Hydroelectric train station for lunch. From Hydroelectric, we complete a flat, scenic 3-hour walk alongside the Urubamba river railway to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you check into a private hotel room with hot showers and Wi-Fi, followed by a celebratory group dinner.
At 5:30 AM, we take the official shuttle bus up to the entrance gate of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Your licensed guide leads an immersive 2.5-hour tour through Circuit 2 (or panoramic Circuit 1), visiting the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana sundial stone, the Sacred Plaza, and royal agricultural terraces. After taking your memorable photos, you return to Aguas Calientes to collect your stored duffel bag and board the afternoon Expedition train to Ollantaytambo. Our private transfer meets you at the station and returns you safely to your hotel door in Cusco by 7:30 PM.

The 5-day route includes the hike across the Llactapata Inca ruins on Day 4, direct visits to organic coffee farms, and leisurely recovery at Cocalmayo hot springs. The 4-day route bypasses Llactapata by driving directly from Santa Teresa to Hydroelectric on Day 3, condensing the total trail time by one full day.
Our pack horses and muleteers carry up to 5 kg (11 lbs) of your personal gear in a heavy-duty duffel bag provided during your Cusco pre-trek briefing. You only carry a light daypack (20 to 30 liters) holding rain gear, water bottles, sunscreen, and valuables during the daily hike.
Nights 1, 2, and 3 are spent in professional 4-season mountain tents pitched at established campsites (Soraypampa, Chaullay, and Lucmabamba). Night 4 is spent in a private hotel room with an ensuite bathroom, hot shower, and Wi-Fi in Aguas Calientes town.
