Ready to walk on the Andean rainbow? The Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain Tour takes you to Cusco’s most famous summit at 5,036 m (16,522 ft) of altitude. After a 3 km (1.8-mile) hike surrounded by llamas and alpacas 🦙, you will behold the majestic Ausangate glacier 🏔️ and a unique mineral landscape. An unforgettable high-altitude challenge!
The full-day expedition to Vinicunca, traditionally known as Cerro Colorado, is located in the Vilcanota mountain range within the Quispicanchis province. The distinctive coloration of its slopes is the direct result of the accumulation of marine, lacustrine, and fluvial sediment layers exposed by the region’s tectonic activity. The trail ascends through high Andean grasslands inhabited by local communities dedicated to camelid herding. Throughout the trek, visitors enjoy clear views of the Ausangate glacier, the most sacred peak in Cusco’s history. If you prefer a more accessible and less crowded alternative, we recommend checking out the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain tour, which is ideal for families or travelers wishing to avoid steep climbs and extreme elevations.

The walk goes through Andean communities living separated from the modern world. On the whole way, you will breathe the fresh air of the mountains.
This tour is also known as the “Arco Iris Mountain” (Rainbow Mountain) and permits to appreciate one of the most beautiful landscapes that Peruvian geography could offer. Which is the reason why “National Geographic” included it in its list of “100 places you should visit before dying”.
Around 11.00 am, we will reach the summit of Vinicunca mountain from where we will be able to enjoy the famous view of the rainbow mountain. The different colourful lines which display the natural beauty of the region are the consequences of mineral erosion. There, we can relax, take pictures and videos to remember, and simply admire the amazing panorama of all the rainbow valley.
After a couple of hours, we will start the way back in direction of the Quesiuno community where we will have a meal and then return to Cusco where we will arrive around 7.00 pm.

The hike is rated as moderate to challenging, primarily due to the extreme altitude. The trail starts at 4,600 meters and reaches the summit at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft). The hiking distance is 3 km (1.8 miles) round-trip, but requires steady physical effort.
We highly recommend spending at least 1 or 2 days acclimating in Cusco before this tour. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol, and consume hot coca leaf tea.
Dress in layers suitable for freezing mountain wind: a thick windproof jacket, thermal gloves, a woolen hat, high-factor sunscreen, UV sunglasses, a rain poncho, and trekking boots with good grip.
Yes, local community members offer optional horse rental services at the trailhead. The cost is approximately 140 soles ($35 USD) cash for the ascent, paid directly to the local horseman.
The best time to visit is during the dry season (from May to October), when skies are clear and sunny. During the rainy season (December to March), the ridge may occasionally be covered in snow or fog.
