Frequently Asked Questions

🎒 What is the difficulty level of the Choquequirao trek?

The trek to Choquequirao has a Demanding difficulty level. The hike requires crossing the Apurímac River canyon, which involves steep descents and ascents under variable weather conditions (intense sun or rain depending on the season). Excellent physical condition and prior preparation are essential.

⛰️ Is prior acclimatization required in Cusco?

Yes, absolutely. Although Choquequirao is at a lower altitude (3,050 m.a.s.l.) than the city of Cusco (3,400 m.a.s.l.), the physical strain is intense. We suggest spending at least 2 days in Cusco before starting the route to ensure optimal oxygenation and performance during the hike.

🥾 What type of luggage or equipment should I bring?

Since this is a 4-day expedition, we recommend bringing a light daypack with water, snacks, sunscreen, and a rain poncho. The main equipment (tents, food) is carried by our muleteers. You will need breathable clothing, waterproof trekking boots, and hiking poles, which will relieve stress on your knees during ascents and descents.

🚿 Are there toilets and showers at the campsites?

Yes, there are organized campsites along the route (such as Chiquisca and Marampata) that have basic toilets and rustic cold-water showers managed by local families. We recommend bringing your own toilet paper and biodegradable toiletries.

🏛️ What is the difference between Choquequirao and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

Both are stunning Inca destinations, but they offer very different experiences. Choquequirao (the “sacred sister”) is a much less traveled, more pristine, extensive, and physically challenging route, offering a real remote expedition experience. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is more touristy, highly regulated, and culminates in the famous citadel, but its trail is paved with original Inca stone.
