The desert oasis of Huacachina enjoys a remarkably stable arid climate throughout the year. Located in the rain shadow of the Andes Mountains along the hyper-arid Peruvian coast, Ica experiences over 300 days of sunshine per year with almost zero measurable rainfall. However, seasonal shifts affect daytime temperatures, water pool warmth, and coastal wind patterns.
| Season | Months | Daytime / Night Temperatures | Desert Travel Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coastal Summer (Peak Season) | December – April | Day: 28°C – 33°C (82–91°F) Night: 18°C – 20°C |
Intense sunshine, warm evening breezes, ideal for poolside relaxation and lively lagoon nightlife. |
| Coastal Winter (Mild & Crisp) | May – November | Day: 22°C – 26°C (72–79°F) Night: 12°C – 15°C |
Very comfortable daytime hiking temperatures on the dunes; crisp evenings requiring a fleece jacket. Less crowded. |
Between July and September, southern coastal winds intensify across the desert plains. Known locally as the Viento Paraca, these afternoon gusts can generate localized sandstorms across the dunes starting around 2:00 PM. Fortunately, winds usually subside before the 4:30 PM sunset hour, leaving firm sand ripples that make sandboarding faster and smoother.
If you prefer a relaxed, photographic desert atmosphere, visit between Monday and Thursday. On weekends and national holidays, domestic travelers from Lima arrive in large numbers, packing the lagoon promenade and creating long queues at the buggy launch ramps.
Speedboat cruise around sea lions and Humboldt penguins, traditional pisco vineyard tasting in Ica, and exhilarating 4×4 dune buggies with sunset sandboarding.
