Description

The Salkantay 5 Days Tour toward the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu go through the valley of Salkantay. It is a trek of 73 kilometers that is a popular alternative to the Ina Trail as it does not require booking months in advance and offers breathtaking vistas as you traverse diverse landscapes and climates.

Listed by National Geographic as one of the top 25 treks in the world, our tour has travelers enjoying stunning views of the snowy Salkantay, visiting lagoons including Humantay Lake, reaching the highest point of Peru (4,600 m) above sea level, going through different plantations and forests and finishing at the lost city of the Incas, with sunrise views and a guided tour of Machu Picchu. 

It is recommended to take some time to acclimatize before starting the tour since the trek is demanding.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa (Humantay Lake)

Participants are collected from their respective accommodation at 5:00 am and take private transport to Mollepata where we will enjoy breakfast and then, we will continue by car to Challacancha where the trail begins. Around 9:00 am, we will start the walk to reach Soraypampa.

On our way to our first camp site, we will be able to appreciate impressive viewpoints of Umantay mountain and the water aqueduct that supplies water to Mollepata town. After a walk of 7 km, we will arrive to Soraypampa, where we will have lunch and set up camp. After lunch, we will complete the 1-hour trek to Humantay Lake, situated at the base of Humantay mountain. Here we have the opportunity relax, explore and enjoy the spectacular view before returning to the campsite for dinner.

Day 2Soraypampa - Paso Salkantay - Chaullay

The sunrise will be impressive because the first thing we will see is the majestic Salkantay. Around 6:00 am, we will start walking to reach the highest point of the trek 15,190 ft (4630 m). In the trek of 7 km for about 3 hours, we will have a great view of all the valley and the snowy peaks of Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo.

From here we begin our decent to 9,515 ft (2,900 m). After a lunch break at the 2-hour mark, we will continue walking through a abundant vegetation on one of the ancient Incan trails. After about 3 hours walking through magnificent landscapes, we will arrive at our second camp site in Chaullay (2,900 m) where we will be able to enjoy a nice dinner.

Day 3Chaullay - La Playa - Santa Teresa - Thermal baths Cocalmayo

We will begin our day by walking toward a place named La playa, through the valley of Santa Teresa. During this walk, we will be able to enjoy the colorful flora, waterfalls and different plantations of coffee, bananas, avocados, mangos and maracuyas.

After a lunch in La Playa, we will take a transportation for about 1 hour the town of Santa Teresa, where we will enjoy the relaxing thermal baths of Cocalmayo (optional $ 5 USD) and later spend the night in this charming town.

Day 4Santa Teresa - Hidroeléctrica - Aguas Calientes

This day, we will be able to leave a little more late in the morning and to enjoy our hot breakfast. In the morning, you can go try the zipline (for those who reserved ahead).

After the activity, we will walk for about 2 hours toward Hidroeléctrica, where we will enjoy a delicious lunch. Then, we will continue for about 3 hours to reach the town of Aguas Calientes. The view on this road is unique and beautiful

In Hidroeléctrica, participants have 2 options: walk the 3 hours left to Aguas Calientes or take the train for an additionnal fee of about $ 28 USD.

We will spend our last night in an hotel in Aguas Calientes at he foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 5Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

At 4:00 am, we will begin our climb to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in order to witness the sunrise at the summit. If walking, you will begin the hike at 4:15 am to Puente Inca, before ascending the stairs for approximately 1 hour in order to arrive at the main entrance of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, for an extra fee ($12 USD each way), you can opt to take the bus – you will need to wait in line for a bus ticket that morning and the drive up will take approximately 25 min. Both options should see you arriving at the archaeological complex in time for the sunrise.

We will have a 2-hour tour from our guide, allowing you to discover the mysteries and secrets of the ancient Inca citadel. After which we will be free to explore the site independently. if you wish you can go up to the Sun Gate or Inca Bridge. Those travellers who previously booked tickets to Huayna Picchu or Montaña Vieja will be able to access these attractions. These sites are where some of the most iconic images of Machu Picchu are taken and where we will be able to take our own photographs and view the ruins from an aerial perspective.

Later in the afternoon, we will descend to the village of Aguas Calientes where we have the opportunity to rest and pick up any crafts and souvenirs before our return train at 6:30 pm to Ollantaytambo. From Ollantaytambo, transport is arranged to return travellers to Cusco.
